Case Study Info
Poole Harbour is Special Protection Area designated by the European Union to protect endangered species, especially birds.
Two dense seagrass meadows are present at Salterns Marina and Whitley Lake. To protect them and avoid the impacts from physical disturbance, the Blue Meadows protection scheme has delimited the presence of these fragile habitats to water users by implementing our Blue Meadows marker buoys.
The seagrass meadows in the Harbour support a rich diversity of marine wildlife including some of the U.K’s most protected species of seahorse. The SPA also provides support for numerous bird species including, breeding common tern and Mediterranean gull, as well as migratory aquatic warbler, and little egret, as well as supporting an internationally important Waterbird assemblage.
